PIG KEEPING

Small-scale pig keeping is rewarding in so many ways that even just by thinking about starting to keep pigs you will begin to feel the blood racing and a million questions rushing through your mind.  Each chapter in this book will reward your enthusiasm and you will find the following:

Provided you have enough land anyone can keep pigs.
Registering to keep a pig is very simple but you must not keep a pig before you have followed the correct procedures.
A small area of rough scrubland or woodland is ideal for a pig.
Pigs are remarkably clean animals and do not need a great deal of space.
Contrary to the opinion held by many people pigs do not smell if kept and fed correctly.
Provided you follow some basic rules pigs are not consistently noisy animals.
Pigs do not need constant attention unlike many other animals. As well as needing to be fed and watered, cows need milking; sheep need shearing; chickens need securing from foxes; dogs need walking, and while all these animals are adorable you will find pigs need very little apart from food, water and kindness.
Attending a short course on keeping pigs and taking advice from the many pig clubs, associations and societies before you embark on your adventure will save you money and heartache.
Unlike many new ventures, small-scale pig keeping need not be a drain on your finances and it can be quite the reverse.
Pig keeping can be rewarding both financially and emotionally as well as producing ‘a mouth-watering eating experience’.
